Dullstroom, established in the 1880s, was named after its Dutch founder, Wolterus Dull, and the numerous streams in the area—'stroom' being the Afrikaans word for 'stream'. The town was officially proclaimed on October 9, 1893, by then State President Paul Kruger.
During the Second Anglo-Boer War, Dullstroom faced significant challenges. The village was razed by British forces, leading many settlers to return to Holland. After the war, pioneers like TNH Janson were instrumental in rebuilding the town. Today, Dullstroom's rich heritage is evident in its architecture and cultural sites. The town features historical buildings from the 1890s, and the local cemetery reflects its diverse cultural history with headstones bearing English, Irish, and Boer surnames.
For those interested in exploring this history further, At Kinloch Lodge we offer guided tours, providing insights into the town's past and its development over the years. Additionally, the Dullstroom Heritage Museum showcases exhibits that highlight the town’s history and the influence of European settlers.
We have scheduled guided tour groups visiting these sites and participating in heritage tours offer a comprehensive understanding of Dullstroom's historical journey and its cultural significance in South Africa.
